Does Medicare Cover Home Health Aides?

Short answer

Medicare can cover part-time or intermittent home health aide services only when the beneficiary also qualifies for skilled home health care and Medicare’s home-health requirements are met.

Coverage

The beneficiary generally must be homebound, need qualifying skilled nursing or therapy and receive services through a Medicare-certified home health agency under a plan of care.

Not Automatic

Personal care alone, round-the-clock home care, meal delivery and homemaker services by themselves are not standard Medicare home-health benefits.

Costs And Ma

Covered home-health services generally have specific Original Medicare cost rules; DME furnished during home health can have separate cost sharing. Medicare Advantage may use network agencies.

Practical Example

An aide may help with bathing as part of a qualifying skilled home-health episode, but Medicare generally will not cover ongoing bathing assistance when no skilled need exists.

Questions to verify

  • Do I meet the homebound and skilled-care criteria?
  • Is the agency Medicare-certified or in-network?
  • What part of the aide service is tied to the skilled plan of care?
